Hangzhou, June 7, 2024 – A new Humanoid Robot Innovation Institute has been launched at the ZJU-Hangzhou Global Scientific and Technological Innovation Center (HIC-ZJU), marking a major step forward in China’s robotics sector.
The institute, backed by Zhejiang University and the Hangzhou Municipal Government, aims to integrate cutting-edge research in materials, information, and life sciences, positioning itself as a leader in humanoid robotics.
Prominent attendees at the launch included Academician YANG Wei of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, who called humanoid robots “a key force in the digital era” and urged the institute to focus on real-world challenges, attract top talent, and drive rapid innovation.
The research centre will collaborate with Hangzhou Kaierda Welding Robot Co., Ltd. and is led by WANG Hongtao, who outlined a three-year plan to develop advanced robot design tools and AI integration for use in manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, and home services.
Officials say the new institute strengthens ties between academia and industry, and could help position Hangzhou as a global robotics hub.
